The GHG Protocol offers two different tools for estimating GHG emissions from cement manufacture:
- US EPA tool: A cement-based tool requiring data only on annual cement production. Emissions are calculated using clinker: cement ratios and CaCO3: raw meal ratios. This tool is based on the U.S. EPA’s ClimateWise program (1999).
- CSI tool: A clinker based tool suitable for when the amount of clinker consumed is known.
Cement companies have other sources, such as the fuels combusted to operate dry ovens. All sources that are typically associated with a cement company are listed below.
Please note that the tools listed in these emissions categories are meant as a guide only. Some companies may wish to apply the tools differently according to their operations.
